Charities
We donate a minimum of 1% of the retail price of each Naturalife product to selected charities. The charities we chose to support at present include:
The Peter McVerry Trust.
Peter McVerry Trust is the new name for the charity which was formed by Fr. Peter McVerry, in 1985, formerly called The Arrupe Society. The trust provides services to those who need help in breaking the cycle of homelessness, and to aid their move towards independent living. Their mission statement says, Peter McVerry Trust is committed to reducing homelessness, drug misuse and social disadvantage through its provision of housing and support services.
Fr. Peter McVerry SJ has been working with Dublin's young homeless for more than 30 years. In 1979, Fr. McVerry opened a hostel to address the urgent need for accommodation for young homeless people. Four years later he set up a charity called The Arrupe Society, to provide further housing and support. Renamed in 2005 as Peter McVerry Trust, the charity has progressed from providing a three bedroom flat in Ballymun to today's wide range of services catering for the diverse needs of young homeless people through supported accommodation, drug detox, education and training.
Gorta.
From its formation, gorta's approach to the reduction of poverty and the elimination of hunger has been through helping people in Developing Countries grow their own food. The Irish Freedom from Hunger Campaign began in 1960 under the auspices of the Irish Red Cross Society. In 1965 gorta, the name deriving from the Irish word for extreme hunger, was founded under the aegis of the Department of Agriculture as the agency with responsibility for tackling hunger through small scale agricultural development projects in the developing world. At all times gorta strives to achieve ecological, financial and social sustainability and places the interests of women, who make up the main body of the agricultural labour force in developing countries, at the centre of its work. However, at the same time, the close involvement of men and of the entire family unit is essential. Finally, gorta addresses health issues such as HIV and malaria as integrated components of the food and water security programmes to round off its highly practical approach to tackling hunger.
Ireland-Moldova.
This is a small Irish charity based in Co Wicklow. It is run by Michael Kinsella who spends a considerable amount of time and effort in providing the best care for children. He works primarily with orphanages and asylums in Moldova and Belarus.
Kisiizi Hospital, Uganda.
Uganda. Kisiizi Hospital is situated in south-west Uganda, between Kabale and Rukungiri. It is in the Kigezi highlands and is about 4,500 feet above sea level. The Hospital was established in 1958 by the Ruanda Mission and subsequently handed over to the Church of Uganda, being now part of the ministry of the North Kigezi diocese based in Rukungiri. The staff show great dedication in service to patients who come from a large catchment area stretching hundreds of miles, patients sometimes traveling from beyond Mbarara, the regional town 80 miles away. It is a unique and vital part of the community that provides life saving services that would otherwise not be available to these people.
