Nutritional Therapist Sarah Brereton explores the causes of water retention and offers dietary and lifestyle tips to help manage it effectively.

Fluid retention can result from hormonal imbalances, lack of exercise, dehydration, inflammation, or other health conditions. Dietary and lifestyle adjustments are often the first line of defence. Eating more fruits and vegetables while reducing processed foods and refined carbs can help. Lowering sodium intake and increasing potassium, vitamin B6, or magnesium may also be beneficial, as can incorporating herbs like dandelion and parsley into your diet. If fluid retention persists despite these changes or appears suddenly, consulting your GP is advisable.

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is a longstanding home remedy used in cooking and natural medicine. In Ireland, nearly every household has had a bottle of ACV at some point. This versatile vinegar can be added to salad dressings, used as a hair rinse, or taken in a morning health drink with lemon.

ACV’s primary active compound, acetic acid, is believed to contribute to its health benefits. Made by fermenting ripe apples, ACV contains proteins like pectin, enzymes, minerals such as potassium and magnesium, and beneficial bacteria that form what is called “The Mother.” As a prebiotic, it supports a healthy digestive system.

While food sources are generally best for nutrients, ACV tablets offer a convenient, less acidic alternative. Ensure the product you choose contains “The Mother” for maximum benefits. Quality ACV tablets may also provide amino acids and antioxidants.
