The Natural Defence System - restoring natural components to your diet that are lost through modern farming and processing techniques
What are Salvestrols?
Salvestrols are an identified micronutrient essential for supporting balanced health (homeostasis). They assist our cells in healing when damaged, acting as a "cell rescue" mechanism that helps restore normal function. The name comes from Salvia, meaning "to save". Salvestrols are abundant in deeply coloured fruits and vegetables, with the most beneficial being certain varieties of organic oranges, blueberries, blackberries, and grapes.
How can Salvestrols benefit my health?
Salvestrols can benefit your health by supporting the body’s natural ability to target and eliminate unhealthy cells while leaving healthy cells untouched.
Why can’t I rely on my diet for Salvestrols?
Modern farming, food processing, and consumer preferences have significantly reduced the natural levels of salvestrols in our food:
Agrochemicals: To produce perfect-looking fruits, farmers often use non-organic fungicides, helping to rid of fungal infections (mould). However, this also prevents these fruits from creating salvestrols in response to such infections.
Processing and Preparation: In an ideal world, we would all consume locally sourced, raw foods, as cooking and processing methods reduce salvestrol content drastically.
Taste: Salvestrols are naturally bitter and tend to be most concentrated in fruit skins, peel, or rind, which are often discarded. Modern tastes favour sweeter fruits, so many salvestrol-rich varieties have been bred out.
How do antioxidants and Salvestrols differ?
While salvestrols do contain antioxidants that help prevent DNA damage, they go beyond typical antioxidant action by working after cellular damage has occurred. This selective action aids in maintaining cellular health and balancing the body’s natural defences.
How do I take Salvestrols?
Salvestrol supplements should be taken with a meal for optimal digestion. Please consult your Healthcare Practitioner for personalised Salvestrol advice and nutritional plans.
Salvestrols, a discovery
The scientists in the UK who discovered salvestrols – led by Gerry Potter (Professor of Medicinal Chemistry) and Dan Burke (Emeritus Professor of Pharmaceutical Metabolism and former Head of the School of Pharmacy) – were initially developing synthetic pharmaceutical products that use this method to combat disease. During their research, they realised that similarly structured compounds naturally occur in many foods.
However, they were surprised to find that foods which should have been rich in salvestrols were often devoid of them. They soon realised that modern farming and food processing practices were unintentionally reducing these vital compounds in our diets. Recognising the potential of salvestrols to support cellular health, their research attracted over $30 million in funding, enabling extensive studies to unlock the benefits of these micronutrients for human health.
