Planning a holiday this year? Rosanna Davison reveals her top body confidence tips.

Summer is finally on the horizon and hopefully you’ve started to make some plans for a  well deserved rest in sunnier climes. Spring is the best time of the year to really place a focus on nutritious food, fitness and making positive lifestyle choices to help you feel your most healthy and confident. With warmer weather in sight and the opportunity to enjoy wearing shorts, T-shirts, dresses and swimsuits, it’s natural to place more attention on making healthier food choices and getting plenty of fresh air and exercise as the evenings become brighter.

We all come in different shapes and sizes, and that’s definitely something to be celebrated. I feel that the primary focus for all of us should be feeling as confident as possible and making the health and fitness choices that best suit our own body, lifestyle and goals because we’re all biochemically, genetically and metabolically unique. I also firmly believe that body confidence can be built no matter your height, size or shape, and that life is too short to worry about a bit of cellulite. If losing weight or toning up is one of your goals, allow yourself some time to achieve this. Three months is a sensible amount of time to lose weight and build muscle tone in a safe, sustainable and healthy way through regular exercise and a balanced eating plan designed for your individual goals. I’m not a fan of crash or fad diets as they’re simply not a healthy way of losing body fat, and dieters often put the weight straight back as soon as they resume normal eating patterns.

Research suggests that optimising your digestive health is an important aspect of weight loss and overall well-being, so choosing the right supplements can help. A favourite of mine is Udo’s Choice Super 8, which is designed to support digestive health and encourage the growth of beneficial gut flora and nutrients.

BE AWARE OF SIMPLE CARBS - For weight loss to be most effective, cutting back on simple carbohydrates is important. These include refined sugar, sweets, biscuits, cakes, chocolate, alcohol, fizzy drinks, many processed foods, sugary breakfast cereals, white bread, pasta and rice. They can really impact on weight loss, and especially the fat stored around your middle. Eating a well-balanced diet packed with whole, fresh, one-ingredient foods is important, as is regular exercise, sufficient sleep, plenty of water and keeping an eye on portion sizes.

Eating until you’re three-quarters full and only eating when you’re genuinely hungry are good rules to stick to when trying to lose body fat. So many people get caught up in obsessively counting calories, or basing their diets too much on processed foods. I like to eat as little processed food and refined sugar as possible, and I don’t watch my food intake or count calories. I simply listen to my body. I aim to only eat when I’m hungry and I stop before I’m too full. Mindful eating is key to becoming more aware of your everyday food and energy needs.

BEAT THE BLOAT - There can be plenty of reasons for why you get bloated. Constipation can be an issue for a lot of people, and is one of the main causes of bloating. Eating a diet high in fibre rich plant foods and drinking more water can make a big difference. For many women, it’s simply hormonal and an annoying symptom of that time of the month. For others, it can be a result of eating too quickly and gulping in excess air, not chewing food correctly, eating foods that your body may find more difficult to digest, or the carbon dioxide in fizzy drinks. It can even be related to eating too much refined sugar and salt, digestive issues or an imbalance of ‘unfriendly’ bacteria in the gut. Fortunately, there are a couple of excellent supplements that can help to reduce bloating and rebalance your system. Udo’s Choice Digestive Enzymes help support digestion and reduce post-meal bloating by supporting the efficient breakdown of food. Also, New Nordic Apple Cider High Strength tablets are helpful for alleviating water retention, thanks to their natural formula based on apple cider, dandelion and artichoke. They can also help to support digestion, and boost energy levels.

MAKE TIME FOR FITNESS - I make exercise a part of my lifestyle and treat it as time out for myself. It’s very difficult to achieve sustainable, healthy body fat loss without exercise. Keeping active helps to burn excess calories and build up lean muscle mass, to boost your resting metabolic rate. I find that a combination of weight training and cardio really works to build muscle while burning body fat, but it’s important to do what you enjoy and can fit into your lifestyle.
